Blessing in Disguise

My friend Elizabeth was asked to lead an evening twenty-somethings Bible study at her church.  No one thought to give her a key to the church, and she didn't think to ask for it.

So, after dinner, we pulled up to church without a way to get inside.  Instead, we set up camp in the parking lot and began to study the Word of the Lord.

The evening was beautiful.  A light breeze, no humidity, and a beautiful sunset.  If we had had a key, we would have missed the beautiful day God created for us!  It was absolutely perfect for sitting outside.

While we were finishing up our study, the pastor drove up and offered to let us inside.  We were all pretty content with where we were.  Then he told us they were going to shoot off fireworks from the field next to the church in a few minutes.

If we had been inside, we would have missed the fireworks, the coolest end to Bible study ever.

Sometimes what's seen as a problem, such as a lack of a key, can really be a blessing in disguise.

Are you looking for blessings in disguise?

A Close Encounter

I am thankful for the grace of God and His arms of protection.

After safely driving eleven-plus hours, Amber and I were within a mile of our destination when life could have changed dramatically.

Katie: Your roads are narrow here.
Amber: Not really.  It's because I'm driving in the middle of the road due to the deer.  If I go back where I belong they're not that narrow.
Katie: I guess so.

As she was returning to her place in the middle of the road, a deer as tall as the car charged our passenger side.

I only saw the buck out of my peripheral vision, but Amber saw him head-on.  We cannot explain how.  He was in her blind spot, so we think she might have looked at me to talk.  If she hadn't, his antlers would have been through the window (and possibly into my head?).  As it were, she swerved towards the center of the road the same time the deer changed direction and ran parallel to our car.

Katie: Did you hit him?
Amber: I DON'T KNOW!  Did you hear anything?
Katie: Nothing that sounded like deer-hitting noises.  Only gravel squishing noises.

Upon further inspection of her car, there are no antler scratches and no deer fur.

There is no reason we should have made it home unscratched.  We were charged by a buck!  And yet we did.  Because God is good.  All the time.

Of course, when we got home a mile later, the adrenaline was still pumping and going to bed was not an option, even though we had to be up again in less than seven hours. That morning was rough.

She's Nuts

I appreciate Neal.
I don't always appreciate it when he sticks his finger into my ear, reprimands me in my dreams, gives me weird directions, or throws his dead skin cells in my face.  But all in all, I appreciate Neal for everything he does.

The other day I was complaining about doing my devotion and reading the wrong passage.  I'd read seven chapters in 1 Kings instead of four chapters in 2 Kings.  Oops.  Since he's our campus minister, I was really expecting him to call me out on the fact that I was complaining about reading the Word of God.  Sometimes Nealio doesn't respond the way I expect (see the dead skin cells blog).

"You know how to get through those long Old Testament passages, right?  Walk around, reading aloud, and act them out."

Neal's one of those people that if he gives me advice or a direct command, I should probably listen.  Neal says "Jump;" I say, "How high?"  Thus, I'm going to give it a try.  So, if I'm walking around talking to myself: don't panic; I'm just doing my devotion.

"But don't do this with Song of Solomon," he added.  Thanks.

Are you willing to look silly and try it with me?

GOD LOVE

It's VBS week round two this week. The craft project the kids were working on was to make a three-layer cross out of Styrofoam and put words on it to read, "LOVE" going up and down and "GOD" going across. Well, some of the older kids are much too creative for these simple projects (our VBS kids range from age 3 to age 14... good luck keeping them all happy at once!).

One kid, took the three crosses and connected them top to bottom. At first glance, it looked like he had just stuck the letters on at random wherever he felt like it. But when I asked him to tell me about it he he said, "It's kind of hard to see at first, but look! Up and down it says 'LOVE.' And then, on the diagonal like this is says, 'GOD.'"

Isn't that life? At first glance it looks random, all out of whack, and with no order at all. Yet when you look closer, God's love is visible. You weren't expecting to see it in the manner than it appeared, but it was there.

Search and find God today,
