I was a little frazzled as I headed towards the front of church for communion. Our self-guided section turned into a mob rather than a line. By the time we half-organized ourselves, I was ready for body, blood, seat. That fast.
I stepped to the front, held my hands out for the wafer, and looked up into the face of our senior pastor. Pastor Mike stopped and looked back at me.
"They're letting everybody in today!" He teased.
It's a joke I've heard many times over the last few years, but it still catches me off-guard every time. I chuckle but my first thought is always, "This is a church; we should be letting everybody in."
To be confronted with this joke at the communion table helped me remember that I am not worthy to even be let in the door much less invited to approach the table of grace or enjoy the sweet taste of forgiveness. This isn't a weekly ritual we do even when the lines turn into mobs... it's a beautiful gift purchased by the ultimate sacrifice.
Pastor Mike placed the wafer in my hand. "Body of our Lord," he said.
In my hands I clutched the tangible reminder of that gift, that forgiveness, that perfect love that I am not worthy of. The body of Christ given for me. The body of our Lord--Pastor Mike's and mine. We may not always agree yet share a common goal: to serve and honor Him. Along with Christians worldwide, we share hope, faith, and forgiveness through Christ. He's our Lord.
"It's good to see you," he said, smacking me playfully in the arm.
I was out of town for the entire month of October. He noticed. Thousands of members and he noticed my absence. Billions of people on earth yet when we haven't spent quality time with the Lord, He notices. Billions of people on earth and when we sit at His feet, He's glad to see us.
I ate the bread, drank the wine, and got lost on my way back to my seat. Both literally among the sea of people and pews but also figuratively in the beauty of that moment I shared with the Lord.
Thankful for grace,
<>< Katie

Trinity Sunday
"I have a favor to task of you," I said, looking up and backwards, searching to find Pastor Mike's face. As with most conversations we've had, PM had me in a headlock.
"You do?" he asked, spinning me around again. I was glad today's greeting didn't involve his binder pounding on my head. That's apparently reserved for the days when I already have a headache.
"Can I borrow your keys?"
"For?"
Dang it. Had I really hoped the senior pastor of a megachurch would willingly surrender his keys to some mischievous members?
"Pastor Russ's office." I quickly began to explain the situation in the briefest of terms. I also regretted not chasing down Pastor Jim (PT) instead. To PT, all I would have needed to say was, "It's Trinity Sunday" and the keys would have been mine.
"Well--" PM started. I knew what was coming: no. It's understandable. You can't have three girls unchaperoned in a pastor's office, even if it is Trinity Sunday.
"We won't touch anything," I added, holding my hands in the air. PM's face softened to a smile.
"I already saw the balloons," he said, reaching through his robe and into his pocket to pull out his keys. "And touch anything you'd like," he added with a laugh.
Yes! Pastor Mike has always liked me. Something to do with his being the father of four girls and my being the oldest of three. Either that or the fact that we were pranking Pastor Russ.
Drums and I tried not to run as we headed down the office hallway and back to our heap of balloons outside PR's office door. The hard work had been done. The Athanasian Creed had been cut apart line by line. Each line had been shoved into a balloon. The balloons had been blown up and the key obtained. Now the fun stuff: the decorating.
We didn't have enough hot air, I mean, balloons to fill the office. Unfortunate! Instead we filled every nook and cranny we could fine. A few under his desk, another behind the guitar, some on the bookshelf, one in the Easter basket, one next to the Jesus doll... more or less, everywhere. We even taped one to his desk that read "Trinity Sunday" and one to his door that read "Athanasian Creed." Now everyone that walks by will be curious as to why PR's office door became a bulletin board... today.
You see, this is a four-year tradition. The first year Melissa and I were caught red-handed. We had the Creed in a plethora of different languages taped to his door. He thought it was hate mail from the "Sex Sermon" he'd done on the 6th Commandment the week before. We learned PT felt left out so the following year we used 12-inch white letters to write "Athanasian" down PR's door and "Creed" up PT's. I was in Costa Rica for the third year, but Dawn and Melissa decorated the door with the Creed... on Post-It notes.
A few weeks ago, Trinity Sunday talk began on facebook.
Melissa: This week is Pentecost. You know what that means next week is?
Pastor Russ: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooo... just kidding.
Katie: Pastor Russ is just kidding. He likes Trinity Sunday.
PR: I like Trinity Sunday. I just don't like "Let's celebrate Trinity Sunday on Pastor Russ's office door."
Katie: We could celebrate Trinity Sunday in Pastor Russ's office, if that would be better.
Dawn: OOOHH! I want in!
Somewhere in here a secret leaked that PR would be out of town this weekend. We started an email conversation.
Katie: Let me get this straight, you're fleeing on Trinity Sunday, leaving your office open for whatever cockamamie scheme we develop?
PR: My office may be boobie trapped. Enter at you own risk.
Katie: For the Trinity, we're willing to risk it.
And we did. PR congratulated us on another clever and successful Trinity Sunday. (Even though he'd popped half of the balloons before discovering the Creed was inside of them). Rumor has it PT felt left out again. We'll have to fix that next year. Any ideas?

PS: Happy birthday, Drums!

Heaven
Pastor Mike said this in church on Sunday:
"We spend a lot more time praying to keep people out of heaven than we do for people to find heaven."
It's true. We spend a lot more time praying that earthly lives are spared instead of eternal lives granted.
Think about it.

Welcome to my Nightmare
I went shopping today. I haven't done laundry in a month and my clothes still need to be pushed down in order for the drawers to close completely. I need new clothes like I need a hole in the head. There were a few things I needed like a new Pastor Mike swimsuit (another story for another day) and a pair of sandals, but really I didn't need to be at the store. It turned out to be a really (really) comical mother-daughter bonding time that I'm grateful for but shopping today hurt, too.
I'm in the fitting room going through my normal mental rant about how they don't make clothes for people. Sure, it looks great on the manikin, but come on. How am I supposed to honor God with clothes like this? That's not very flattering, but look, two of me could fit in the next size up. This isn't working! I literally tried on ten pair of shorts and none of them fit. Talk about depressing! All of the sudden, from a neighboring fitting room I hear a girl (probably in her early teens maybe) screamed,
"NOTHING FITS!"
Amen, Sista I said in my head (ok, not quite, but pretty close).
"I HATE THIS STORE!" Either there were tears streaming down this poor girls face or she's a really good actress. I heard her friends laughing in another dressing room. "YOU GUYS DON'T UNDERSTAND! NOTHING EVER FITS!"
"Welcome to the story of my life," I wanted to say aloud.
This girl broke my heart. Maybe it was that she was experiencing the same problem I was. I don't know how many articles of clothing she tried on. I don't know why they don't fit. I do know she was frustrated to the point of tears. Chances are, she's not going to go home and forget about her experience in the fitting room today. Today could be the day she stops eating because she thinks she's too fat. If clothes were made for real people, maybe we wouldn't have so many young girls suffering from anorexia and bulimia. Just a thought.

And They Say Southerners are Hospitable!
Since it's a holiday weekend there are no youth events at church this week. Mom and I went to the early service (for the first time in my life!), went to Starbucks, then came home and went to a local church. I must admit it was a bit strange to be double-dipping on church. It's as if saying the first sermon wasn't enough, I need a second one (but actually, the first sermon was more applicable). The weirdest part was taking communion twice in one day, especially considering how often I take communion throughout the rest of the year. When I though about it: I had sinned since the first time I took it today. I was aggravated with the driver who cut me off. I was snippy with the cashier who couldn't get my order right. I was frustrated with my sisters. My emotions were all out of whack. :-) But, this isn't a confessional.
Our church and this local church are merging in the near future, and we wanted to see what this church was like. The pastor started the service announcing there were more visitors than members among the 35 congregants present today. Wow! Later during the prayer, he prayed for Pastor Mike by name. Prayed for Pastor Mike's leadership, wisdom, and Godly obedience... Now that's not something we hear everyday. Our prayers for Pastor Mike are usually more jokes: prayers for safe travel and thanks that he's gone... It made me think of Bob's lesson last week at youth group about encouraging each other. Even though jokes and playful teasing can be good and funny, we need to show just as much love.
After church, we were talking to a woman we know from the area. She was so excited to see us because it's been awhile and asked us what brought us to church. We explained what church we were from and suddenly there were a plethora of people around us.
"You're from there?! We've seen your beautiful facilities! Are you a part of this ministry? When does this pastor preach next because we've never heard him? We love everything your church is doing! We're so excited for the merger!"
To put it lightly, they were ecstatic! They are anxiously awaiting this merger to come to fruition. It's so exciting to see God working from the other side. Any reservations I had about the merger before have now been eliminated. Even though I'm not always keen on some of the things my church does and some of their choices, this is a good choice.
Learning to see the other side of the story,
<>< Katie
PS. I know it was not ironic that the pastor preached on Isaiah and read the benediction from Ephesians. :-)
"See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are ever before me. " Isaiah 49:16
